Spread across the sunlit waters of Kennywood’s great swimming pool, hundreds of figures gather in a moment of shared summer — bodies drifting, resting, laughing — a scene both ordinary and extraordinary, now nearly a century removed.
Opened in 1898 as a trolley park overlooking the Monongahela River, Kennywood was created as a place of escape for Pittsburgh’s working families. In a city defined by steel, smoke, and long hours, the park offered something altogether different — air, space, and time to simply be. By the early 1900s — around 1905 — its vast swimming pool had become one of its most beloved attractions, drawing crowds through the 1910s, 1920s, and beyond. For just a few cents, visitors could arrive by streetcar and step into a world shaped not by labour, but by leisure.
This image captures that world in full.
The pool is alive with movement. Swimmers are cutting through the water, others gathered along the sandy edges, reclining beneath the open sky. There is no single subject, no central moment, instead, a collective rhythm. Groups form and dissolve, conversations unfold, laughter carries across the surface. It is a portrait not of one person, but of many lives intersecting in a single afternoon.
Wool swimsuits cling to the body, bathing caps dot the waterline, and the sheer density of the scene speaks to the importance of places like this. Here, entire communities came together — families, friends, strangers — all seeking the same simple relief from the heat, and from the weight of everyday life.
In an era shaped by industry, this was where people reclaimed time — where stillness, play, and connection took precedence over routine. The image holds that feeling: the warmth of the sun, the texture of water against skin, the quiet hum of a summer day unfolding without urgency.
Carefully preserved and digitised from an original historic negative, this photograph carries the detail and atmosphere of its time — each figure, each ripple, each shadow contributing to a scene that might otherwise have faded. The pool itself, once the centre of countless summers, remained a defining feature of Kennywood until its closure in 1973.

Authenticity of Historic Images
Authenticity of Historic Images
Many photographs offered by Lumirra Collective originate from historic negatives and photographic materials dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, including glass plate negatives and early film formats used during the development of photography.
Each negative is carefully digitised using high resolution archival scanning techniques, preserving the remarkable detail captured in the original photograph and bringing these historic images back to life for modern printing.
Due to the age of these materials, some images may contain light scratches, dust marks, or minor imperfections from the original negative. While every photograph is carefully restored and optimised, certain characteristics may remain as part of the image’s authentic historical narrative.
All artworks are printed in the highest possible quality and are supplied without the Lumirra Collective watermark, which appears online only for image protection.
Colours may vary slightly depending on screen settings, device displays, and lighting conditions, and minor differences between on-screen images and the final printed artwork may occur.
